Innovation

Innovation is in the DNA of the Van Asten Group. It is essential for the continued existence of our company, but from a social perspective it is also our task to invest in development. Consider, for example, the welfare of the pigs and odor reduction. From the start, we have been leaders in applying and deploying new techniques and innovations.

Some examples of this are:

  • Automatic liquid feeding installation for processing liquid by-products
  • Biogas production
  • WKO (heat-cold storage)
  • Fermentation
  • Organization 3.0.

Fermentation

An innovation that we would like to take a closer look at is fermentation.

Since 2008, we started fermenting pig feed using lactic acid bacteria. We have developed a method to produce consistently high quality ferment on our pig farms. Our companies now have their own fermentation kitchen.

What exactly is fermentation?

Fermentation is a process that is thousands of years old and that we know, among others, from beer, cheese, yogurt and Yakult. In our case we use lactic acid-forming bacteria. These bacteria convert sugars and carbohydrates into lactic acid, making the product acidic (pH4).

The benefits of fermentation

  • Feeding fermented feed has a very positive influence on the health of the pigs.

  • It reduces our CO2 footprint. Pigs need less feed and we can use fiber-rich raw materials that are difficult to digest and not suitable for human consumption.

  • We can make local protein (such as peas and beans) suitable for pig feed on the farm, instead of using complicated techniques or relying on soy.

  • We no longer need luxurious protein sources for piglet feed, such as milk powder, fish meal or extruded corn.

In short: fermentation is an important pillar in our sustainability strategy.
